Planks For Abs

I am happy to report that I am finally feeling better! The thought (and smell) of food doesn’t make me feel sick anymore and my appetite is slowly coming back. Thank god, because as much as I love smoothies and oats, they definitely get old when they are all you can stomach. Happy to say that I managed to eat all three meals, and three snacks, today without feeling sick once!

I’m also happy to report that I made it back into the gym. After taking a while and letting my body rest, I felt up to it today and I hit the gym after work for a random workout. I had planned to just stick to my typical cardio combo of elliptical, arc trainer and bike and finish with some abs, but the gym was packed so I had to change my plan. I ended up doing 20 minutes on the elliptical, 10 on the stair master and 10 on the bike. All I have to say about the stair master is wow. Talk about a killer workout. I can’t wait to start incorporating more stair climbing into my workouts!

After that excitement, I put together a quick ab workout based off of the abs we do in hot yoga. I’m not sure if it’s specific to my studio or not, but we typically spend 10 minutes of each yoga class on abs. I know – abs in yoga? The first time I took hot yoga (a year ago today!) I remember thinking it was ridiculous that we were doing abs in a yoga class. Fast forward to today and I love that part of class! It’s typically the most challenging part of class for me and my abs are always so, so sore after.

One of the main ab exercises that my yoga teachers typically incorporate is the plank. Planks are great because they are so versatile. You can do so many variations of the plank and target different parts of the body. For tonight’s workout, I kept it simple and stuck to three common variations, but they were still effective.

Just a note – you have the option to extend both your leg and arm in the side plank and doing so really targets your glutes. If you don’t believe me, just try it!

Time for me to hop into bed. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day at work and I’m still catching up on sleep from this past weekend. Fingers crossed that I’ll be all back to normal tomorrow!
